How to Safely Shop Small in 2020

Education Posted on November 20, 2020

So what will this year look like?

Many retailers are already suffering a big hit in sales due to restrictions from COVID-19. We want to help you make the most of the holiday shopping season so you can continue to support these critical players in your local economy, all while staying safe! Here are a few tips to safely shop small in 2020.

Research Local Retailers Online

Many retailers have had more than 6 months to adapt to the new ways customers are shopping. They’ve had to adapt to customers spending more time online and less time in their stores. When making your shopping list, research your favorite retail stores to see if they’ve enabled online purchases. Even if they aren’t shipping, you may be able to make a purchase online or over the phone and plan to pick up the products in person. This will shorten the time you have to spend in the store and still allow you to support the business.

Shop Early

Don’t wait until the stores are jam-packed with last-minute shoppers. If you do plan to shop in person, do it early to avoid large crowds. Many retailers are announcing that the same Black Friday and Small Business Saturday sales will go on throughout the season. Shopping early is shopping safely!

Take Every Precaution

If you’re shopping in-person, follow all CDC guidelines closely. Pack up your mask and your favorite peppermint hand sanitizer before heading to the stores. Do your best to avoid crowded aisles and make sure to keep your distance while waiting in line at check out.

Bonus Tip: Did you know that you can make your purchases without ever touching the card reader?

With any Carter Bank & Trust checking account, you can use your contactless debit card or upload your card information to the digital wallet on your phone so all you have to do is “tap and go!”
